I thought a great deal about the first memory I would share with all of you. I knew right away that it would have to be one of the ones I shared with my younger brother Blaine. He passed in 1983 from something our family has faced across generations. Most of us made it through the toughest years, unfortunately one of us did not.

He was 14 months younger than I was and was my best friend. However, as friends do, we had our fights. When these fights happened with the parents around, Dad would make us do it in a make shift boxing ring in the front yard. It managed to turn our anger into something we could both laugh about later. Because I was bigger then my little brother, I won most of the matches. The best part of these matches, however, was that word would get around the neighborhood and before we knew it, there were others there to fight the winners. I miss those times enormously and I miss him even more.

This is a very fond memory, but it is only one of many. Oh, don’t worry, you’ll hear more of them in the future Memory Lane Stories. For now though, I will think on this one for a while before I move on to the others.

I hope that all of you will take a few minutes each day and think about a happy memory that you have about someone who is no longer with you. It is, after all, the only way to keep them alive. The memory and the loved one. And I hope that you will share that memory with all of us!
